Providing sustainable solutions

Aquaspira was selected by Hopkins Homes, East Anglia’s largest independent housing developer, to provide a sustainable drainage solution for their flagship Barsham Vale development in Beccles, Suffolk. This 241-home project includes various housing types, and the goal was to design and install a system capable of attenuating 910 cubic metres of stormwater while minimising the environmental impact and construction disruption.

Challenge

The project faced several challenges. First, it needed to effectively manage a significant volume of stormwater to mitigate flood risks in the area. Second, the development aimed to minimise its carbon footprint, optimise land use, and expedite construction timelines. Finally, the construction process had to minimise disruption to the local community and the environment.

Solution

Aquaspira’s innovative drainage system addressed a range of challenges at the Barsham Vale development, providing an efficient and sustainable solution. Here are the key points:

  1. Comprehensive Drainage System: Aquaspira designed and implemented a comprehensive drainage system comprising multi-leg tanks and large diameter pipes in the roads to effectively attenuate stormwater.
  2. Mitigation of Flood Risks: The system was engineered to attenuate 910 cubic metres of stormwater, significantly reducing the flood risk in the area, enhancing safety for residents, and safeguarding the development.
  3. Environmental Responsibility: Aquaspira’s lightweight composite steel reinforced pipes and multi-leg tanks minimised the environmental impact. This reduced land usage and lowered the carbon footprint of the construction process.
  4. Efficiency and Speed: The lightweight nature of Aquaspira’s products allowed for swift and safe handling. Smaller machines were used for installation, and excavation requirements were reduced by approximately 25%, optimising the construction process and speeding up timelines.
  5. Minimised Disruption: The efficient installation and reduced excavation meant minimal disruption to the local community and the environment, aligning with the project’s goal of community-friendly development.
  6. Accredited and Adoptable: Aquaspira’s solution met the stringent standards set by Anglian Water, providing an accredited and adoptable system for private housing projects, ensuring long-term reliability and compliance.
  7. Innovative Design: Aquaspira’s use of composite steel reinforced pipes and space-saving multi-leg tanks showcased an innovative approach to drainage solutions, minimising land requirements and safety concerns typically associated with surface-level storage.
  8. Carbon Reduction: Aquaspira’s lightweight design and reduced transport movements helped lower vehicle emissions, contributing to the reduction of the project’s overall carbon footprint.
  9. Optimised Efficiency: The solution optimised the design, safety, and installation efficiency of the development, proving to be a perfect fit for the exclusive Barsham Vale development.

In summary, Aquaspira’s innovative drainage system provided an efficient and sustainable solution, addressing various challenges at the Barsham Vale development while demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Outcome

The Aquaspira solution proved to be a game-changer for the Barsham Vale development. By using composite steel reinforced pipes and a space-saving multi-leg water attenuation tank, the project minimised land requirements and safety concerns associated with surface-level storage. The installation process was efficient, thanks to the lightweight and robust nature of Aquaspira’s products, requiring smaller machines and reducing excavation needs by approximately 25%. This optimised design, safety, and installation efficiency, all while minimising disruption to the local community.

Furthermore, Aquaspira’s solution adhered to the standards set by Anglian Water, providing an accredited and adoptable system for private housing projects. In the end, this sustainable drainage solution not only mitigated flood risks but also significantly contributed to reducing the project’s carbon footprint, demonstrating Aquaspira’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation.

Products used

Under Road Drainage: 675mmØ, 750mmØ, 1200mmØ & 1800mmØ Pipes with 1200mm & 1800mm Access Units
POS Attenuation Tank: 3-leg 1800mmØ Tank

Aquaspira has worked with us on four or five developments and we asked our consulting engineers to specify Aquaspira at Barsham Vale because it would provide a lower carbon solution, minimise land take and reduce programme time. An accredited and adoptable solution is vital and Aquaspira provides this, the added benefit is that the three metre sections of pipe help with the ease of installation.
