Optimising land usage
In a bid to optimise land utilisation and address the stormwater attenuation needs of a significant housing development project, the drainage design team devised an alternative solution. They integrated the storage requirements by installing an extensive network of large-diameter combined carrier and storage pipes beneath the road layout. This included 179m of 1200mmØ, 21m of 1050mmØ, 353m of 900mmØ, and 259m of 600mmØ Aquaspira pipes.
Challenge
The primary challenge was to efficiently manage stormwater without encroaching on valuable land resources. Additionally, the project aimed to enhance overall efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability while reducing excavation and material usage.
Solution
Aquaspira pipes emerged as a highly cost-effective and multifaceted solution for Taylor Wimpey. Key benefits included:
- Programme Improvements: The lightweight yet durable spigot & socket pipes streamlined installation, significantly ac celerating the process. This also reduced excavation requirements by an impressive 25-30% compared to conventional concrete pipes.
- Health & Safety: Aquaspira pipes, weighing only 5% of concrete pipes’ weight, facilitated safer handling and installation, minimising the risk of on-site accidents.
- Design Optimisation: The pipes’ minimal outside diameter and slimline joints optimised space utilisation within the road layout.
- Environmental Impact: Aquaspira’s composite structure not only used fewer raw materials but also incorporated recycled steel, resulting in an impressive 25-30% total recycled content. This aligned favourably with Taylor Wimpey sustainability goals.
- Reduced Site Deliveries and Safer & Quicker Offloading: Aquaspira pipes allowed for an average 60% greater load utilisation compared to concrete pipes, reducing the frequency of site deliveries and expediting offloading procedures.
Outcome
